San Diego County Launches Affordable Housing Dashboard

San Diego County’s April 2026 launch of the interactive dashboard marks a turning point for market transparency in our region. This tool gives residents a real-time look at affordable housing supply to help them navigate our complex local market. It’s a vital resource for anyone looking for stability in one of the country’s most competitive real estate environments.

By the Numbers: Current San Diego Housing Inventory Statistics

The new dashboard provides a detailed look at the state of supported housing projects across the county. These figures represent the latest verified data regarding our regional inventory:

  • 127 distinct housing developments.
  • 9,516 total affordable units.
  • 1,051 units currently under construction.
  • 1,625 units in the pipeline.
  • 1,276 units designated as Permanent Supportive Housing.
You can view the San Diego County Council calendar for upcoming meetings regarding these development schedules.

The Housing for All Hub and Mapping Resources

The “Housing for All Hub” serves as a centralized location for residents to access essential services and data. Within this site, the “Affordable Housing Map” provides eligibility guidelines for neighbors with disabilities, those with income restrictions, and people experiencing homelessness. Consolidating this information makes it much easier for residents to understand which properties fit their specific needs.

Expert Perspectives on Regional Affordability Challenges

Stephen Russell, President and CEO of the San Diego Housing Federation, provides a necessary reality check regarding this new tool. He notes that the dashboard currently only tracks units financed by the County rather than including all local cities. Expanding this data to the entire region is the only way to get a complete picture of the market.

Hillcrest resident Devin Newcomb currently pays roughly $ 1,400 in rent, which is a rare find when nearby units often hit $ 3,000. He represents the middle-income trench that is increasingly looking for an exit from California to find more affordable options. These high costs are forcing local workers to make difficult choices about their future in San Diego.

Research from the UC Policy Lab shows that residents who leave the state are 50% more likely to own a home within seven years elsewhere. This trend illustrates the immense pressure on renters who want to transition into homeownership but feel priced out of the local market. Maintaining accurate, transparent data is the first step in addressing this exodus of our local workforce.

Investment and Future Development Strategy

The County has invested more than $ 334 million into expanding housing options since 2017. These funds are distributed through the Innovative Housing Trust Fund along with various state and federal sources. A key part of this strategy involves repurposing excess County land to accelerate the construction of new units.

These financial commitments have already resulted in the creation of 3,445 homes across the region. Another 2,600 units are currently in the development phase to help meet the high demand for affordable living.

Stable housing is the bedrock of San Diego’s economic resilience and local culture. For more info on the county’s plans for housing growth, read our blog here.

Regional Impact

This new dashboard is a major step toward addressing the regional housing crisis through data and transparency. Providing neighbors with a real-time look at inventory helps demystify the search for affordable housing. Continuous updates will be essential to ensure this tool remains a reliable resource for everyone in our community.

In the future, including data from every local jurisdiction will provide the most comprehensive look at our housing landscape. Ensuring every resident has access to stable housing is vital for the long-term health of the region.
